Big jets. Relentless wind. Frozen hands.

We spent the days and nights on distant runways at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, working through bitter cold and black ice. One by one, jets came in for deicing, engines deafening, wings crusted with snow. Glycol deicer sprayed in wide arcs, raining down on our crew.
