EARLY COVID ICU — APRIL 15, 2020
Photographed inside a Boston-area ICU at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic—an unfiltered look at the people who carried the weight.
I was asked to photograph inside the COVID ICU at a busy regional hospital at the height of the pandemic. The gravity of it was unmistakable.
At first, my thoughts went straight to my family and the risk I might be bringing home to them. I also found myself quietly measuring who I really was. Was I the kind of person who only showed up when things were easy and safe? Or was I someone who could be counted on when it truly mattered? So, when I thought of it that way, of course I went.
I don’t know if any of you remember just how terrifying that time was, but try to picture stepping straight into a world where every single patient was fighting for their life with COVID.
The doctors and nurses, the maintenance crew, the cleaning staff, the food service folks, the support teams, were right there, deep in it, shoulder to shoulder.
